What’s the silliest transfer rumour of the last few months? Carlos Tevez and Eden Hazard have been linked with pretty much every club on the planet this season, but what about the really bizarre stories?
Back in August, Newcastle couldn’t wait to be shot of Joey Barton and in one day he was linked with Spurs, then Manchester United, Everton, Aston Villa, Stoke… Celtic… and QPR, where he ended up of course.
Sticking with midfielders, Frank Lampard spent time this season linked to Sir Alex Fergerson’s United, and was also supposed to be heading to shady Russian moneybags outfit Anzhi Makhachkala, but then so was every top player, like Cristiano Ronaldo… Fernando Torres… Steven Gerrard… and football’s very own Mr Sunshine El Hadji Diouf – who ended up opting for a season at Doncaster Rovers instead.
Sometimes the facts are much better than the rumours… like Robbie Fowler turning down a contract with Blackpool because they offered him £90 a week.
Or Monsieur Sulk himself Nicholas Anelka becoming Shanghai Shenhua’s player-manager! He even got some glasses to show how tactically brilliant he is!
But one MLS Big Cheese stayed where he is. Yes, good old Golden Balls was bandied around as usual… David Beckham found the prospect of joining Joey at QPR all too easy to resist…
