The boys came out like we did three days ago [against Burnley], we scored a really good goal, on top in the game, and again we shoot ourselves in the foot.

Sheffield United defender Phil Jagielka: "It is another disappointing performance. We tried to keep it tight and got a bit unlucky with the first goal but the second put the game beyond us.

Southampton manager Ralph Hasenhuttl: "They played [Edinson] Cavani and he is very hard to defend against. We couldn't keep the pressure high on them. We tried everything and made a fantastic game.

Afterwards, manager Smith said: "It's a hard game to decipher. They have a specialist free-kick taker and he's put one on a plate for the first goal and scored two great goals. We were 3-0 down at half-time - we weren't at our best, but it was a bitty half with lots of stoppages.

Asked whether it was a tough learning experience coming up from the Championship, Bilic said: "You have to learn, but this is not a school. "You have to be competitive and do your best.

Burnley midfielder Dale Stephens: "It's not the debut I wanted but we deserved something from the game. There wasn't much in the game and we will build on that second-half performance.

Southampton boss Ralph Hasenhuttl to BBC Sport: "I think we conceded a stupid goal shortly before half-time. Then we had a big chance for 2-1. "On the counter-attack it's 1-2. From that our heads are going down and a team with this quality kills you immediately.

Crystal Palace boss Roy Hodgson: "It was always going to be a tough opening fixture for us, but I am really pleased with how we approached it. "I have to take my hat off to our goalkeeper for making a fantastic save, but I am very happy to get off to a good start against a team like Southampton with such good quality.
