Christian Karembeu has joined the growing ranks of Frenchmen writing off Les Blues chances at SA2010.
The former France international says that a win against Uruguay on the opening day of the tournament will come as a “pleasant surprise”.
His comments came after William Gallas announced he would not talk to the media throughout the tournament. No reason has been given for the Arsenal centre-back’s stance, but there is speculation he is unhappy Patrice Evra has been made captain. France are under fire in their domestic media after a string of sub-par performances in both qualifying and the build up to the World Cup.
And some pundits believe they will struggle to make it through Group A, which includes South Africa and Mexico, as well as Uruguay.
Karembeu added: “There is blatant problem in defence. It’s hard to reshuffle a team in one month, to change the system like that.” Aime Jacquet — who guided France to glory in 1998 – and former France captain, Marcel Desailly, have also been critical in recent days.
