Full-time Chelsea 3-1 Birmingham
Chelsea manager Carlo Ancelotti on the title race:
“In football we have to believe until the referee whistles for the end of the game. The game is not finished but Manchester United have a fantastic advantage.”
Chelsea v Birmingham line-ups:
Chelsea: Cech, Ferreira, David Luiz, Terry, Cole, Essien, Mikel, Lampard, Kalou, Drogba, Malouda.
Subs: Turnbull, Ivanovic, Torres, Benayoun, Zhirkov, Anelka, Bertrand.
Birmingham: Foster, Carr, Johnson, Ridgewell, Parnaby, Larsson, Gardner, Ferguson, Fahey, Hleb, Jerome.
Subs: Doyle, Bowyer, Phillips, Bentley, Derbyshire, Beausejour, Davies.
Referee: Mike Jones (Cheshire)
GOAL Chelsea 1-0 Birmingham (Malouda)
Chelsea goal: As it stands, Chelsea just went second. A fairly routine goal to get us started too as John Terry plays the ball out to the right, Paolo Ferreira whips over a cross and after Didier Drogba flicks on a header at the front stick, Florent Malouda has gambled inside the six-yard box and he prods home.
GOAL Chelsea 2-0 Birmingham (Kalou)
Chelsea goal: That’s a quite brilliant goal from Salomon Kalou and the hosts are in firm control at Stamford Bridge now. Didier Drogba tees him up but he’s 30 yards from goal and with an awful lot to do. Kalou races past Roger Johnson, skips past Stuart Parnaby as if he isn’t there and then smashes in a right-foot screamer that flies into Ben Foster’s net via the keeper’s left-hand post. Foster didn’t even move.
GOAL Chelsea 3-0 Birmingham (Malouda)
Chelsea goal: I think the Chelsea players might like Ryan Bertrand, you know. The youngster has only just come on for Ashley Cole and he flings over a super cross from deep on the home team’s left flank, finding an unmarked Florent Malouda inside the Birmingham six-yard box to head into the ground and into the net. Game over, and the Chelsea players all rush over to Bertrand to congratulate him.
GOAL Chelsea 3-1 Birmingham (Larsson penalty)
Birmingham goal: Consolation for the visitors as David Luiz fouls Matt Derbyshire on the edge of the Chelsea and it’s a definite penalty. Sebastian Larsson steps up and rifles home the spot-kick.
