Cesc Fabregas will be given his Barcelona debut tonight in the second leg of the Spanish Super Cup against rivals Real Madrid. The former Arsenal captain did not feature at all in pre-season as the details of his return to Spain were formalised and therefore lacks match practice. Nevertheless, he is fit to make his bow tonight according to Barca boss Pep Guardiola.
He stated, ‘He has trained very well, a lot of time alone, and also some bits with the team. He will surely be in the squad, but we will see if he will play the whole 90 minutes or not’. It remains to be seen how Fabregas will fit into the Barcelona team this season with Xavi, Andres Iniesta and Sergio Busquets the preferred three not only at club level, but with the Spanish national team as well.
The first-leg of the Super Cup finished 2-2 and Guardiola was impressed by what he saw from Real Madrid. He added, ‘In the first leg, Madrid were better, in these three days we have improved some things, but I believe they are still better. That is the feeling I have, but every match is a story. If the return leg were in two weeks, it would be different’. The match tonight is live on Sky Sports 2.
