Selecao midfielder Elano has been ruled out of the quarter-final clash against the Netherlands because of injury.
The Galatasaray star was forced to limp out of the group game against Cote d’Ivoire after suffering an ankle injury in a challenge with Elephants defender Cheik Tiote.
Having sat out the Round of 16 clash against Chile, the 29-year-old was expected to recover in time to be fit for the meeting with Bert van Marwijk’s side.
But the Brazilian medical team confirmed on Wednesday that the former Manchester City midfielder would not make Friday’s match, having been unable to complete Tuesday’s training session.
“I’m not saying that he won’t be able to play again at this World Cup but he won’t be ready for Friday,” said Brazil’s team doctor Jose Luiz Runco. “He has bad bruising and it was after he trained on Sunday that he said that he was having problems. The bone is swollen and we have to release the pressure on it so he will do nothing strenuous for the rest of the week. We still hope he can play next week but I can’t say that he will be able to categorically.”
