Arguably one of the biggest fixtures in the Premier League calendar, European champions Chelsea host Manchester United at Stamford Bridge this Sunday hoping to build on their impressive start to the season. They currently hold a four-point lead over the Reds, so defeat for the away side could be a huge blow to their title ambitions.
Both teams come into the game on the back of underwhelming performances in the Champions League – Chelsea were outplayed in losing to Shakhtar Donetsk, while Man Utd were lucky to walk away with a 3-2 victory at home against Braga. It’s likely that both sides will be determined to put their recent poor performances aside, but the away side may have to improve sharply if they’re to avoid falling behind in the title race early on.
From the very first game of the season, Man Utd have had huge problems with defending, which has seen them concede against teams that normally they would shut out. Not helped by the absence of players such as the influential Nemanja Vidic, they have already leaked 11 goals in eight games in the League.
For all Manchester United’s defensive flaws, they have been hugely impressive going forward, with new signing Robin van Persie settling in almost straight away alongside Wayne Rooney and Danny Welbeck. As for Chelsea, Fernando Torres is slowly getting his confidence back, while their expensively-assembled midfield seems to be clicking together.
If you’re into football betting at Labrokes, you might want to bet on Chelsea to win 3-1 at odds of 18/1 or perhaps 3-2 at 20/1. The latter bet looks great value, especially as the two sides have scored a combined 40 goals this season, averaging five per game. If you’re unsure of the correct score, Chelsea are reasonably priced at 7/5 to win, while the Reds are at a more distant but tempting 15/8.
