David Beckham has admitted that England’s failure to secure the 2018 World Cup left him ‘sick to the stomach’. He also responded to criticism that senior figures did not do enough to secure the bid by stating that the bid team – including Prince William and David Cameron did all they could to secure victory.
The England legend also accused FIFA delegates of being two-faced and said the voting system is flawed. He stated, ‘There was so much hard work that went into that bid. And no one could have done any more. Then you factor in we also had the weight of the Prime Minister and the future king of England behind us. It doesn’t get much bigger and better than that. I went to Trinidad, Prince William did other things, the Prime Minister was involved’. England lost out last December as Russia secured the bid but Beckham has not been deterred in taking on further ambassadorial roles in the future, ‘…I have actually loved the success of bringing the Olympics to London, and putting the bid forward for the World Cup’.
Beckham, who faced Manchester City last night and is set to face old club United on Wednesday, has confirmed he is not quite ready to hang up his boots yet. He has seen fellow professionals such as Gary Neville, Paul Scholes and Nicky Butt hang up their boots in recent weeks but is not yet ready to join them. He stated, ‘I feel I’ve got one, maybe, two more seasons’.
