Newcastle star Joey Barton has backed former team-mate Andy Carroll to prove his worth next season, claiming that Andy will “kick-on.”
Carroll had a stop-start beginning to his Anfield career, arriving on a deadline day (injured) that smashed records around England. At £35million, Carroll became the most expensive British player of all time, and smashed Liverpool’s transfer record. However, it wasn’t until March 6th, nearly two months after the frontman’s arrival, that Carroll made his debut. On April 11th at home to Manchester City, Carroll opened up his Anfield account with two fantastic goals, one being that famous header.
Carroll only made 8 appearances however, but Kenny Dalglish has been quick to back his No.9, continually reminding critics that “Andy is signed on for 5 years, not 8 games.” And Carroll’s old team-mate Joey Barton has made clear his expectations of Carroll for the following campaign.
Magpies midfielder Barton told the Liverpool Daily Post: “It’s always difficult when you go to a new football club and you’re not fully fit.He had a niggling injury when they signed him. He’ll be looking to get pre-season under his belt and look to kick on and show Liverpool what an asset they’ve acquired.
“He’s a great lad and we were all gutted to see him leave Newcastle but it was a no-brainer, really. He had to go and test himself at a fantastic football club with great tradition.
“I stay in touch and we’re all wishing him well but not when he plays against us!”
In other news Liverpool have rejected an offer from Juventus for Raul Meireles. It has been reported that Juve offered cash plus midfielder Felipe Melo. Liverpool do wish to sell Meireles, but only for a straight cash deal. Liverpool have told Juventus they can have Raul Meireles for £13.5million.
