According to Sky Sports News, Arsenal have opened preliminary talks with Birmingham over a possible move for defender Scott Dann. The Blues defender did not start the club’s opening Championship fixture last weekend and is widely expected to leave St Andrews during the transfer window in the wake of their relegation from the Premier League on the final day of last season.

The imposing defender formed an impressive partnership with Roger Johnson last season – who has since moved to Wolves. His season was cut short by an injury and many feel that had Dann been fit for the final few months of the season, the club may have remained in the Premier League. Gunners boss Arsene Wenger is keen to strengthen his defence having seen the season fall apart last season by deficiencies at the back.

Arsenal have held initial discussions with the St Andrews club over bringing the 24-year-old to North London. A host of Premier League clubs have expressed an interest but it seems Arsenal have moved to the head of the queue for the self-confessed Liverpool fan. Wenger is likely to have funds to invest in the market with skipper Cesc Fabregas set to complete a move to Barcelona this week. The latest news can be found at www.arsenal.com.
