Jack Wilshere has handed Arsenal a major boost by walking for the first time without crutches since undergoing ankle surgery in September.

The talented midfielder had the operation following a stress fracture of his right ankle and was not expected to be fit until at least March. But he could return as early as January and broke the good news on his Twitter page, ‘First day without crutches in a while! Feels so good!’

England boss Fabio Capello will also be keeping a close eye on developments with Wilshere, who he hopes will be available for the European Championship’s next summer.
