Wayne Rooney is ready to wear captain’s armband against Brazil, says Fabio Capello.

If John Terry fails a fitness test on his injured ankle, Fabio Capello will have no hesitation in making Wayne Rooney England’s third youngest post-War captain. Rooney will be partnered up front by Darren Bent against Brazil. Capello feels that Rooney, on whom England’s attacking hopes hang, can handle the additional responsibility of leading the team against the five-times world champions in Saturday evening’s friendly.

“Why not? I remember the best players in the world – Pele, Cruyff, Beckenbauer, Platini, Maradona – were captains of their national teams. They scored goals. So why not? All the best players were captains. Why not Rooney?

“When you choose some players to be a captain, you have to be a leader in the dressing room or a leader on the pitch. The captain is Terry and vice-captain is Rio [Ferdinand] because they are really good on the pitch and in the dressing room. Rooney is always a leader on the pitch.
