When Liverpool bought Jonjo Shelvey from Charlton Athletic for £1.7 million in the summer of 2010, the Reds had landed one of England’s revered young talents; one who could be Liverpool’s answer for Gerrard when his boots are hung up for the last time.
Over his time at Liverpool has enjoyed a few first team appearances, but has been a regular fixture in the reserve team at just 19 years old. Shelvey has made 19 appearances for the Reds first team, and was sent on loan to Blackpool towards the end of the summer’s transfer window. Falling behind the likes of Charlie Adam, Jordan Henderson and Dirk Kuyt in the pecking order, the loan move was seen as a win-win situation for both parties. Shelvey’s Blackpool time was short-lived due to an emergency call-back after Lucas picked up an injury, but his time at Blackpool gave Kopites and England fans alike a sense of excitement. Shelvey scored six goals in ten appearances for Ian Holloways side, including a superb hat-trick.
With Liverpool in the Carling Cup final and into the fifth round of the FA Cup, Shelvey hopes his impressive displays in the reserves can land him a spot in Liverpool’s cup runs. At Liverpool however, the most important game is the next one, and with a trip to Manchester United looming on Saturday, Shelvey hopes he can earn a spot on the team-sheet come lunch-time Saturday.
‘Games don’t come much bigger,’ Shelvey told liverpoolfc.tv. ‘I came on last year there in the FA Cup. It was a great atmosphere to play in.
‘Hopefully I can be on the bench on Saturday, but we’ll have to wait and see. It will be a great atmosphere and we’ll have a great set of fans (travelling) there.’
