Tottenham Hotspur got the first advantage in Carabao Cup first leg semifinals over Chelsea as Mauricio Pochettino’s men defeated The Blues’ 1-0 at Wembley.
It was certainly a cup game with strong big match element especially for the home side as they put out a very strong squad in that first match up.
The Blues actually started out pretty well, but Tottenham slowly got things going before eventually got themselves ahead thanks to Harry Kane’s spot kick.
It was a decision assisted by VAR technology as Kane was initially judged off side before he was fouled in the box by Chelsea goalie, Kepa Arrizabalaga.
However, after consulting with VAR the reff appointed to the spot which was converted expertly by the England international attacker.
After that goal, Maurizio Sarri’s men regained control of the tie as they created more problems for Tottenham with their wing play.
After the break, The Blues got even more dominant with their possession play and attacking moves, but their lack of true center forward was visible as they struggle to finish their chances.
Even after Olivier Giroud’s introduction late in the match, nothing really changed much for Chelsea in the final third as they can’t get that equalizing goal.
Fortunately for Sarri’s men they will still be playing a second leg tie at Stamford Bridge and they should have enough opportunity in turning things around at home.
