Serbia and Iceland Advanced, Wales Out of World Cup

Dramatic events finally occurred in the final round of World Cup 2018 qualifier as Serbia and Iceland confirmed their direct qualification, while Wales found themselves not even making the playoffs.

Serbia finished top on their group following a 1-0 victory over Georgia thanks to Aleksandar Prijovic’s second half goal, which not only securing all three points but also their passage into Russia.

A slightly more convincing victory was grabbed by Iceland as they defeated Kosovo 2-0 with goals netted by Gylfi Sigurdsson along with Johann Gudmundsson.

That win puts Our Boys finishing first in their group, which can be considered a surprised as they sit ahead of Croatia and even eliminated Ukraine.

Croatia themselves in turn will be involved in the playoffs to decide whether they can participate for upcoming World Cup in Russia.

Meanwhile, a dramatic turn of event happened for Wales as their ambition to surpass Serbia turned really sour since they ended getting out of World Cup.

Targeting a victory over Republic of Ireland, Chris Coleman’s side found themselves losing 1-0 instead which puts their opponent taking their runners up spot.

Playing in front of their home crowd, Wales were very offensive since kick off as they were searching for goals early on.

The absence of their super star, Gareth Bale, turned to be very crucial for The Dragons as they were struggling to break down their opponent’s defense.

Instead of getting a goal, the home team found themselves trailing after James McClean scored after 57 minutes.

That single goal was enough to decide the tie as Ireland eventually finished second behind Serbia and earned a playoff ticket.
