Quaresma’s Extra Time Goal Broke Croatia’s Heart

Struggling to make their way into the knock out stages of Euro 2016, Portugal showed some resilience and probably a little bit of luck as they made their way into the last eight stage after defeating Croatia in extra time.

Both teams started out the match in a rather slow fashion as they look to be playing way too careful, keen on avoiding any potential early mistakes.

Not many opportunities were created during the first period as that half ended in goalless draw, there’s a step up in tempo after the break, but no goals were scored still as both teams have to settle things via 2×15 extra time.

Croatia continue to have more of possession and chances during that extra time, but the sparks only arrived in the second half of that  period.

Just as Ante Cacic’s men seemingly close in breaking the dead lock, Portugal got themselves a counter attacking chance which ended in a goal for Ricardo Quaresma, who was unmarked as he pounced on Cristiano Ronaldo’s shot which was saved by Danijel Subasic.

That goal arrived within just four minutes before the final 120 minutes whistle was blown, stunning Croatia players, who looked really disappointed with that situation.

Despite their late flurry, luck doesn’t seem to be smiling for Luka Modric and co as they couldn’t convert any of their opportunities as Portugal hold things down until the final whistle was blown.
