Portugal Survived Late Drama to Book Knock Out Stage Spot

Portugal almost saw their World Cup 2018 campaign ended in such dramatic and confusing fashion when they only grabbed a 1-1 draw on their final group game against Iran this past Monday.

Knowing that a win can guarantee them not only a place in the knock out stage, but also potentially securing table topping position in group B, which means they can avoid early battle against Uruguay.

Things looking smooth for Portugal early on as they dominated possession and looking more dangerous going forward.

That positive display was eventually rewarded as Portugal got themselves in front right on the 45th minute mark from Ricardo Quaresma’s lovely effort.

Selecao das Quinas still looking better than their opponent, and more likely to score another goal, which they should’ve have when they were awarded a spot kick midway into that second half.

However, Cristiano Ronaldo shockingly missed the penalty, leaving Iran with plenty of hope in turning things around.

From that moment on, there’s strong sign of drop in Portugal players’ performance, while Iran looking much more spirited and confident as the game go on.

Eventually, the drama never seems to stop hovering around Portugal as in the last minute they suddenly conceded a penalty kick, which was converted expertly by Karim Ansarifard  in stoppage time.

That match almost turning into a disaster for Fernando Santos’ men, but fortunately they were able to hold that draw result and made their way into the knock out stage to challenge Uruguay.
