Manchester City and Manchester United both grabbed positive results on their latest UEFA Champions League group stage fixtures as they defeated their opponents, but not only that, they also grabbed the headlines for controversial things.
Man City continue to show their dominance on their group with a massive 6-0 win against Shakhtar Donetsk, which saw Gabriel Jesus bagging a hat trick, while David Silva opened the scoring in that match.
The other two goals for City were netted by Riyad Mahrez and Raheem Sterling, who pretty much became the center of attention on that match due to his controversial penalty decision.
Sterling got his name into another rather unpleasant situation when his awkward fall in the penalty area resulted in a spot kick, while the replay clearly showed that he stumbled into his own feet.
That incident suddenly turned into an internet sensation, not in the most positive fashion indeed, while the officials on that match also received serious criticism, pushing UEFA to speed up VAR’s inclusion in their competition.
Meanwhile, Man United also picked up a massive and morale boosting win as they defeated one this season’s favorite Juventus, 2-1 in Turin.
It was looking like the same result at Old Trafford was about to arrive for Juve, following Cristiano Ronaldo’s wonder goal, but in the last few minutes from two set pieces, Jose Mourinho’s men were able to score from Juan Mata and Leonardo Bonucci’s own goal.
At the end of that match, Mourinho once again triggered attention from fans and media as he made a certain gesture for the Italian side’s fans, which caused a short commotion on the pitch.
Ahead of both teams upcoming encounter against each other this upcoming weekend, it’s certainly positive for them to pick up maximum points that provide extra motivation ahead of the Manchester derby.
