Man City Eliminated by Monaco In Champions League, Atletico Through
Manchester City’s ambition to conquer Europe still need more time as they found themselves eliminated in the last 16 of Champions League after losing against Monaco.
Leading 5-3 in aggregate after their first leg victory, Pep Guardiola’s men failed to hold down their advantage as they were beaten 3-1 by their French rival.
Despite drawing 6-6 on aggregate, City lose out due to away goal rules as their opponent were able to notch three goals away from home while the Premier League outfit only grabbed one.
It was an intense game since kick off with Monaco having the better start as they were chasing for goals, in which they immediately earn after just eight minutes of play through their young star, Kylian Mbappe.
That early goal brought that extra confidence for Leonardo Jardim’s men throughout that period as they eventually added their second just before the half hour mark, this time from Fabinho’s effort.
Man City tried to come back after the break knowing they needed at least one goal and their positive approach did work when they pulled one through Leroy Sane’s finish.
However, within just six minutes later, the home team got their two goals margin back with a header from Tiemoue Bakayoko.
That third Monaco’s goal seemingly put a hammer blow on City players’ confidence as they struggling to create opportunities afterwards and eventually have to accept their elimination.
Meanwhile, Atletico Madrid also got through into the quarter finals following a goalless draw against Bayer Leverkusen which means that Diego Simeone’s men advance on a 4-2 aggregate.
Already having a 4-2 lead on aggregate after their away victory in the first leg, Atletico notably had a much calmer approach on their second game at home and despite failing to score they still comfortably go into the next round.
