Liverpool maintaining their runners up seat in English Premier League standings, following an important win over third place seat, Manchester City on New Year’s eve.
It was an important match for both teams, especially they were playing after knowing that league leader, Chelsea won their game 4-2 over Stoke City.
That situation forced The Reds and City to push hard for three points if they don’t wan’t to lose more ground against Antonio Conte’s men.
Playing in front of their home crowd at Anfield, Liverpool put on an aggressive approach since kick off and that effort was rewarded when Giorginio Wijnaldum opened the scoring just before the 10 minutes mark.
That early strike triggered an intense battle between those two sides, notably Pep Guardiola’s men as they are determined to get back into that tie.
Nevertheless, it was not an easy task as Jurgen Klopp’s boys were putting on a solid display defensively, not giving much space for their opponent.
Despite having more of the possession, Man City were struggling to create chances in the final third, allowing the home side to hold their slender lead until the final whistle was blown.
Meanwhile, Chelsea can’t stop winning as they collected their 13th win in a row, scoring four goals through Gary Cahill, Willian’s double and Diego Costa.
Their opponent, Stoke put on a pretty good fight as they pulled two goals back from Bruno Martins Indy along with Peter Crouch.
