A rare sighting happened in FIFA World Cup 2018 as England managed to win in penalty shoot out and made their way into the tournament’s quarter final after eliminating Colombia.
It was certainly an intriguing match for Three Lions as they suddenly found themselves as a strong favorite to win following James Rodriguez’s absence for Los Cafeteros.
Without the Bayern Munich’s men, Colombia’s attacking fluidity was simply missing and it’s visibly shown even since the early minutes of that match.
England themselves did not long superior though as they also struggles in breaking down their opponent’s defense, especially during the first 45 minutes.
Nothing really changed after the break with both sides still playing with similar approach they did in the first half, but Gareth Southgate’s men got themselves a break through when Harry Kane earned a somewhat controversial spot kick, which he expertly convert.
Unfortunately for England that slender lead didn’t decide the contest as Colombia got back on level terms in stoppage time through Yerri Mina’s towering header, forcing that tie to go into another 2 x 15 minutes.
Both teams looking rather tired and too cautious during that extra time though as neither were able to score any goals, taking the tie into penalties.
Having a rather poor record in penalty shoot out, England seemingly preparing hard for the scenario, yet they still almost spoiled it when Jordan Henderson saw his effort saved.
Nevertheless, fortune was simply on Three Lions’ side as Colombia suddenly went on to miss their final two shots, while England redeemed themselves by making theirs.
This victory put Southgate’s side booking a meeting with Sweden in the quarter final, another intriguing contest as the Scandinavian side have seemingly been the giant killer throughout this tournament.
