Colombia secured their path into the last 16 of FIFA World Cup 2018 after grabbing a precious 1-0 victory over Senegal.
Only picking up three points from their previous two games, forced Los Cofeteros to pick all three points in order to get that ticket into the knock out stage.
Acknowledging the important of a win, Jose Pekerman’s side immediately put on an aggressive approach in search of early goals.
However, it was not easy to break down Senegal as Aliou Cisse’s side put on a slightly defensive approach and playing more on the counter.
No goals were scored during the 45 minutes as both teams failed to convert in any of their goal scoring opportunities, forcing them to try things over in the second period.
In the second half, Colombia tried to increase their attacking intensity as they’re the one that needed three points more than their opponent.
Los Cofeteros’ approach was finally rewarded when Yerri Mina scored from a header on 74 minutes, giving them what they were eagerly wanted since the first minute.
That goal triggered strong reaction from Senegal as they now must face potential elimination seeing that they are behind Japan in terms of fair play rule, something that’s hardly happened before.
Despite of their efforts, the African outfit couldn’t break down Colombia’s defense and have to accept their failure in reaching the knock out stage of World Cup 2018.
