Almunia, 32, admits there have been times when the younger players in the side have struggled to express themselves and believes now is the time to find their “identity” when the Blues visit Emirates Stadium on Sunday.
“The good thing about this game is that we have to react and it has to be quick,” said the goalkeeper.
“The first opportunity was against Standard Liege but even more against Chelsea because they are one of our direct opponents in the title race. We have to make sure we have no silly mistakes.
“People are used to seeing Arsenal as a great team with beautiful football but if we lose our identity for four or five games in the season, you are not going to win the title. Without your identity, you have nothing and you will lose.
“There are players who can lead this team and have great character but I think more people have to show leadership no matter what age they are. In football, with no character you don’t win anything.
“There are not many old players here but the young ones sometimes don’t show the character they have. The older players must also help open the eyes of the younger ones to help them do this.”
