Manchester City striker Mario Balotelli was involved in fresh controversy last night after a furious bust-up with boss Roberto Mancini during City’s pre-season game against LA Galaxy in Los Angeles. The Italian striker was hauled off after just 30 minutes after an outrageous piece of showboating after being put clean through on goal by David Silva.
Balotelli was left with just the goalkeeper to beat but instead of shooting, he produced a pirouette and attempted to back-heel the ball into the net much to the disbelief of the watching crowd. Edin Dzeko was left clutching his head in embarrassment whilst fellow players Vincent Kompany and Nigel de Jong could not hide their anger at the lack of respect shown by the striker. Mancini immediately called James Milner from the bench to replace Balotelli and the two exchanged words as the Italian took his seat in the dug-out. Balotelli had seemed to indicate he believed he was offside and he did not appear alongside the other substitutes at the beginning of the second half.
Balotelli is no stranger to controversy, he missed the FA Cup final parade after starring in the final and his red card in the Europa Cup led to City’s exit from the competition. He was also seen throwing darts at Academy players and has had various bust-ups with players in training over his attitude which has been deemed as unacceptable. There is no question that the striker is a huge talent and is rated extremely highly at City, but he could be running out of chances unless he addresses his behaviour towards his fellow professionals.
