It took just eight minutes for Germany to break the deadlock when Ozil volleyed towards goal and the ball took a deflection off Klose and rattled into the net. Ozil then turned scorer after 23 minutes when he played a wonderful one-two with Klose before finishing into an open net as the Austrians were left stranded. Germany made it 3-0 after 28 minutes as Podolski drove a low effort past Gratzei before Austria cut the deficit just before half-time with a fine header from Arnautovic.
Ozil restored Germany’s three-goal lead moments after half-time as he finished well from a Thomas Muller header. Seconds after however, Arnautovic found Harnik who hammered the ball home to make it 4-2 on the night. After a rare scoreless period, Muller played a one-two with Klose and Schurrle found a finish to make it 5-2 late on. They were not finished and made it six courtesy of Gotze who volleyed home as Germany sealed qualification for Euro 2012 in style. Whilst Austria will have to make up a six-point gap on second place to secure a play-off spot.
