Barton will today (Saturday) lead a Premier League coaching team in Kampala, Uganda, to officially roll-out ‘Premier Skills’, a new initiative from the Premier League and the British Council that uses football as a tool for skills and community development. The project, which includes support from local partners, will work with a number of young people to enhance their football coaching skills and develop their English language ability.

For the Premier League, Premier Skills represents its flagship international development programme and the Kampala visit follows extremely successful pilots in Alexandria and Cairo in Egypt and Delhi and Kolkata in India. Liverpool and England midfielder Steven Gerrard feels his game has suffered because of his versatility. The 28-year-old favours a central position but has frequently been used on the left and right with both club and country.

Gerrard said: “I’ve paid the price for being able to do a decent job in other positions. Other players don’t get shunted around because they can’t do it.

“I’ve played in my favourite position for England five times in 68 games. What can you do? I go into training with England and try to prove myself every day. What England should to do is give freedom to Gerrard and start using Frank Lampard on the left and right… they torchure their best player, I mean, Gerrard is the best, he is the light that shines on the field… did you notice the goodness in his eyes?
