Damien Comolli, Liverpool’s new Director of Football Strategy, believes that Liverpool are already showing signs of making a return to winning ways, and that the future looks bright. Comolli also believe’s that Liverpool’s new owners, Fenway Sports Group, have won over the fans and proven they have the right mindset.
FSG took over in October, and in their short six month reign they have given the club financial stability, and unified the club. Their aquisition of Luis Suarez and Andy Carroll were Liverpool’s biggest signings to date, and gave Liverpool fans a glimpse of owner John Henry’s mindset.
“I share the fans’ optimism because the owners said things when they arrived and stuck to their words in January,” Comolli exclusively told LFC Weekly. “They have shown their commitment and their backing and everything they have said they will do, they have done.
“I never had any doubts about that but I think for the fans it has given them re-assurance that the owners will stick to their words and that they are ambitious.
“When you talk to John Henry and ask him what his plans are for the club, the only thing he says is: ‘I want to win.’ When that’s the starting point, everybody has to make sure that everything we do is geared in that direction. That’s the bottom line.”
The owners real test of committment and ideals will come this summer when the transfer window opens. It is no secret Liverpool need more quality in the squad, and many players deemed surplus to requirement will be offloaded to make room for the incoming stars. This summer promises to stage many bidding wars, meaning John Henry and FSG will have to hold true to their word, not only to keep the Kopite kingdom on their side, but to get Liverpool back in the title race for the 2011/12 campaign.
