Wednesday’s Argentina vs Uruguay odds will have betting players on the edge of their seats as both are fighting for the final qualifying spot in South America. Argentina holds onto fourth place by the slimmest of margins after a miracle on Saturday, but Uruguay won’t go down without a fight.
Argentina vs Uruguay
Wednesday, October 14
Estadio Centenario, Montevideo, Uruguay
Kick-Off: 6:00 PM ET
The Argentineans needed a last-gasp goal from Martin Palermo to beat Peru 2-1 at home on Saturday, after it looked like the hosts were done due to a 90th-minute equalizer. Palermo scored with virtually no time left to spark scenes of celebration in Argentina, and he made manager Diego Maradona look brilliant as he came off as a second-half substitute. Still, the Argentineans need a much better performance on Wednesday.
Uruguay
Diego Forlan’s injury-time penalty was the difference in a 2-1 win for Uruguay at Ecuador, and in Forlan, Uruguay may have the best pure striker in all of South America. Forlan has proven it with a great club career and he always answers the call for his country, but will it be enough to will Uruguay to the World Cup finals in South Africa next summer?
Soccer odds have Uruguay as a +140 favorite at home, while Argentina is right behind them at +150, and a draw comes in at +215. Their last meeting was a friendly that was postponed in May of this year, and prior to that, Argentina won 2-1 at home over Uruguay back in October 2008. This will be a tense contest, and Argentina’s nerves will show through Maradona, who is coaching what is easily the biggest match of his managerial career. Argentina has a little more leeway in that they can draw, while Uruguay needs to win, which is where Argentina’s possession game will come into play.
Argentina vs Uruguay sportsbook pick: Draw +215
